Selected Topics in Taiwan Studies

The course topics focus on the following themes: historical development, political and economic system, basic parameters of Taiwan's society, Taiwanese literature, Taiwanese media, music and film, traditional religions, habits and customs, heritage of the folk culture (legends, songs and stories), Taiwanese anthropology (introduction of indigenous tribes that represent ethnic minorities) and tourism. Each theme will discuss specific text written in traditional Chinese characters. An important emphasis will be put on explaining notions related to cultural ethical and national connotations of Taiwanese culture and Taiwanese cultural identity.

Required readings include both primary Taiwanese sources written in Chinese language (traditional characters), as well as secondary literature written in English. The list of basic readings is, as follows:
