Students learn the basics of spoken and written Japanese: its pronunciation, the two syllabaries hiragana and katakana and 200 Chinese characters, basic vocabulary (ca. 800 words), basic morphology and syntax and the most common sentence patterns. In class they practice using these words and patterns in different situations.
